Kakushi Toride Aikido is based on a principle of non-violence and the understanding that the truest form of self-defense is to have no enemies.
Through the extension of ki, or life force, generated by beneficent intention, a center to center connection is formed between attacker and aikidoist. This connection allows an attacker to safely follow a path to the ground while feeling protected, thereby dissipating the desire to continue attacking.
Aikido’s Founder Morihei Ueshiba saw his art as a way to make the world one family. He described it as a spiritual art this way:
Aikido is the true budo, the working of love in the universe. It is the protector of all living things.
Even more than this, aikido is a path to transformation of self.
Through aikido one can learn to conquer one’s fear, lead a more realized existence, and live more fully in the moment.
